Nearby Battle

In a Nearby Battle you compete head to head – up to 10 players on several phones sitting next to each other. The connection runs fully offline via nearby Bluetooth and Wi-Fi: no internet, no account, no sign-up.

The idea

Studying alone is one thing – competing against each other is another. The Nearby Battle turns practice into a contest for the car journey, the train, a break, or an afternoon with friends. Because it works without a network, it also works where there is no reception.

Create or join a game

One device takes the role of the host, everyone else joins:

The host picks Create game, sets the game type, mode and number of rounds, and lands in the battle lobby.
Everyone else picks Join game and lets their device search for nearby games. Once the game is found, they tap Join.
In the lobby the host sees how many players are connected. As soon as everyone is there, they start the round with Start game.

Everyone enters their name beforehand – that way it is clear who is who on the leaderboard.

Game type & mode

The host decides what you play for:

Quiz – questions from a category chosen by the host.
Vocabulary – words from one of your vocabulary boxes. This requires at least one box to exist on the host device.

On top of that comes the mode:

Fastest – everyone gets the same question at the same time, and what counts is who answers correctly first.
Taking turns – players take turns, each answering their own question.

The host also sets the number of rounds, i.e. how long the game lasts.

How it plays & leaderboard

After the start, the game runs for the configured number of rounds. At the end, the app shows everyone involved the leaderboard with the points they scored.

Requirements

All devices must be close together – the connection runs via nearby Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, not over the internet.
On every device, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi must be switched on and permitted for the app. If a permission is missing, the app points this out.
Up to and including Android 12, the operating system additionally requires the location permission for the device search. The app does not evaluate your position.
